Customs Classification Specialist - Portland


The Customs Specialist liaises with the team lead and the customs specialists. This position classifies footwear, apparel, accessories and other products based on the need according to the country specific customs regulations and is familiar with all functions in the team to be able to act as a back up for the individual team members. In addition, this role is supporting other functions with classification related questions.  


Key Responsibilities:

- Analyse products according to the information in the development systems and the actual local regulations and laws to make the decision on the correct customs tariff codes for different customs regions in a defined timeline
- Ability to support all team members on classification topics over all divisions as a backup function
- Maintain classification data in the systems and make suggestions regarding improvements to increase the data quality
- Obtain binding rulings for new products or in case of uncertainty and build up a close communication with classification authorities
- Support the team members with legislation changes to identify the impact on the current business and ensure together with the team lead to reduce risks for the company
- Provide team internal trainings and support for processes and systems as well as a knowledge transfer between the international teams where needed. Ensure cross-functional communication and an alignment for processes and internal classification rules between the teams.
- Support the team lead in periods of new system implementations and process changes to guarantee a smooth transition period for the team as this area includes often very complex contents
- Prepare regular presentations for Product Development to inform them about the influence of the latest customs regulations and reveal the relation to their business strategies
- Consult Product Development, Product Costing and other relevant stakeholders about the possibilities of product changes to reduce duty rates and avoid customs risks for the adidas Group

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

- Good knowledge of the US classification rules and Customs Regulations
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Good analytical and conceptual skills
- Ability to read, analyze, interpret and explain governmental regulations

Requisite Education and Experience / Minimum Qualifications: 

- 4+ years of experience in customs operations or a similar area (preferably in the Textile or Footwear industry)
- Basic experience with ERP systems
- Good knowledge in Microsoft Office
