Designer Footwear Materials - 8 months Contract (m/d/w)

Purpose & Overall Relevance for the Organization:


Design innovative materials for the future of the brand through combined experience, problem solving, and creativity.


Key Responsibilities:


Continuously aware of information needed to design a consumer and brand relevant collection.  Should include all possible sources to gain this information:

  • Trade fairs, cultural events, and sporting events, athlete insights
  • Trade publications, general interest press, trend services, fashion and sportswear magazines and websites
  • Store checks, market visits, and team travel as provided
  • Industry news in Material innovation and manufacturing 


Assists in seasonal and long-term design direction for Innovation within the following topics:

  • Apparel, Accessories, and Footwear Materials
  • Knits, Wovens, Leathers/Synthetic Leather, Nonwovens, Finishes, and Trims
  • Incorporating Graphics/Print, Color, and Branding Direction
  • Ideation and Integration into product (Footwear, Apparel, and Accessories).


Contributes to aforementioned design direction by, but not limited to:

  • Providing trend forecasting content relevant to our consumer and brand
  • Providing direction and assisting in creating materials with the Material Team using functional insights and a strong aesthetic eye 
  • Supports M3 Senior Team Lead or Design Director to build content for collaborative stakeholders


Works closely with various internal and external partners. This includes but is not limited to:

            •Providing Material content and direction

            •Collaboration and critiquing

            •To understand technical details of the materials and product


Builds top-line range strategy into their concept and material range. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Support Senior Team Lead by owning holistic concept overviews and rollouts
  • Supports communication content to cross-functional partners to align strategy
  • Support and inform cross-functional moments and strategy across brand
  • Continually innovates material concepts to create generations of technology 




Innovates and designs Footwear and/or Apparel Material executions for Innovation with input from cross-functional partners. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Conceptualizing, design, and research stated above 
  • Design technical and innovative materials with attention to look, feel, and function 
  • Create material innovations with consideration of sustainability and efficiencies  
  • Assists in creating design presentations; both physical and digital
  • Exploratory process to reach final solution
  • Creates Material drawings and tech packs 
  • Works closely with Development and testing to assist in development process & costing; meet development timelines and calendar deadlines.
  • Travel worldwide for design and development trips

Knowledge, skills and abilities 


Computer Skills

  • Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop/InDesign
  • Power Point/Key Note
  • Apple Mac Operating system
  • 3D not required, but beneficial

Market Knowledge

  • Understanding of brand history and current positioning
  • Understanding of marketplace (footwear/streetwear/urban) history, consumer, and current positioning
  • Has a strong understanding of material innovations and trends and application
  • Understanding of the product creation process 
  • Understanding of brand and their needs 


  • Ability to understand design concepts and think conceptually
  • Ability to create material designs that meet brand needs and commercial opportunities
  • Ability to design for new initiatives and products with a fresh, innovative perspective
  • Ability to operate in a fast pace, ever changing work environment
  • Works well in a team environment. This position requires employee to engage with many stakeholders, as well as manage various information and relationships

Requisite Education and Experience / Minimum Qualifications:


  • Preferably a BSc or MSc in Textiles, Textile Design, Textile Management, or Bachelor Degree in similar design fields 
  • Direct experience in textile, footwear, fashion or and design relevant environment 
  • Thorough knowledge of art and design with clear understanding of visual design or any design related environment
  • Three years relevant work experience
  • Equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for degree
