Director, Retail Development & Strategy

Purpose & Overall Relevance for the Organization

As the Director of Retail Development, you will implement the strategic priorities and programs of NAM Retail to ensure successful execution of goals and objectives.  You will be responsible for delivering portfolio execution in alignment with growth targets, cross functional projects end-to-end, employee engagement programs, strike team management and holistic business insights.  As a member of the Retail leadership team, you will serve as a connective leader across pillars supported by project management, communications, and analytics direct reports. 

 

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Execution

  • Support and drive the development of NAM Retail strategic priorities and goals, with VP, that ladder to overall company ambitions
  • Develop and manage framework for milestone roadmap creation, governance, meeting cadence, status tracking and completion/rollout creating visibility, alignment, collaboration, and accountability across strategy owners
  • Drive the implementation and full ownership of these strategies, processes, reporting tools and disciplines 
  • Partner with key stakeholders across the business to understand key priorities, intake new briefs, define scope and resourcing needs to bring strategic plans to life
  • Partner with cross functional partners, including Finance and HR, in creation of valid comprehensive business cases to enable fact-based decision making

 

Portfolio Management

  • Support the translation of the Retail Strategic Business Plan and the Own the Game NAM Strategy into concrete goals and roadmaps to ensure the successful delivery of our long-term portfolio plans
  • Implementation store opening roadmap, ensuring on time completion within budget
  • Partner with third party vendors to create data and insight driven location decisions
  • Monitor new store performance to ensure alignment to original forecast
  • Establish a holistic Marketplace intelligence approach, leveraging internal & external data points to drive the success of our portfolio
  • Diagnose, assess and build out analysis & recommendations of projects in relation to macro and internal factors

 

Project Management

  • Lead team in management and support cross-functional initiatives and projects; driving for results and monitoring progress in achieve goals
  • Develop and implement a project overview including a standard procedure to consistently track progress of all ongoing NAM retail initiatives and workstreams

 

Communications/People

  • Own, create, manage, and support Fleet Incentive program
  • Develop employee value proposition program that supports the adidas Global People strategy
  • Deliver store and back-office communications utilizing internal communication systems
  • Lead the team in execution of strategic focus areas, continuously evolving the business and operating model with a strong focus on a cultural and organizational transformation

 

Data & Analytics

  • Develop effective tracking and reporting across initiatives and partner with teams to understand progress, performance, and trends. 
  • Conduct required analysis and prepare necessary materials to support the strategy & business development of NAM Retail Strategic plan and monitor the progress of achieving strategic/project milestones or goals.
  • Drive Retail Analytics across the functional teams to provide ongoing business insights, diagnosis, and assessment in order to influence strategy and optimize Net Sales and/or Profitability.
  • Consistently screen the retail market & industry for best practice and other news as well as benchmark competitors to our Own Retail environment.
  • Create and implement reporting to support decision making and story telling
  • Provide ad-hoc support for the adidas NAM VP- Retail

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Proven experience executing long- and short-term strategies/strategic plans based on thorough understanding of the marketplace
  • Ability to think conceptually, structure a set of complex tasks and prioritize them appropriately
  • Ability to have fact-based, non-political, and transparent business discussion with all employees within the Retail organization.
  • Excellent quantitative and analytical skills
  • Proven ability to distil insights from analysis and drive to action
  • Strong project management skills & ability to coordinate cross-functional project teams from concept to implementation
  • Ability to autonomously work & deliver in fast-paced changing environments, adhering to specified deadlines
  • Highly developed management and inclusive leadership skills
  • Ability to present to senior management to drive decision making
  • Ability to leverage strong interpersonal skills (influencing, communication etc.) to activate cross-functional groups to drive decisions and joint understanding at all levels of the organization
  • IT Skills: advanced MS Office especially PowerPoint & Excel

 

Requisite Education and Experience/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university
  • Ten or more years’ retail management experience with progressively increasing scope and responsibility (a combination of education and experience may be substituted in lieu of a degree)
  • 5-7+ years managing and leading teams
