Senior Communications Manager - Brand Sustainability - Marketing - Temporary until Sept 2023 (m/f/d)

Purpose & Overall Relevance for the Organization:


The brand sustainability transition is at the core of the 2025 strategic plan “Own the Game”.  Nine out of ten adidas articles will be made from sustainable materials by 2025.  adidas is committed to reducing its carbon dioxide footprint per product by 15 per cent by 2025. To this effect, the company is working closely with its partners in the global supply chain to reduce energy and material consumption and make greater use of green energy sources. It aims to achieve climate neutrality in its own operations by 2025 and overall climate neutrality by 2050.


The Senior Communications Manager drives the development and execution of compelling integrated marketing communications campaigns at the global brand level and provides internal direction to visualise strategic plans against the seasonal milestone calendar to support the adidas sustainability brand communication’s objectives.


This role has a close relationship with the sustainability strategy team as well as the innovation team. A strong strategic mind set is required, with expertise of all aspects of communications across channels and touch points. The role requires a strong understanding and interest in sustainability, innovation, consumer experience and brand building.


Key responsibilities:


  • Stay up to date on business plans, developing media environment, consumer insights as well as the overall sustainability and innovation agenda.
  • Act as partner to the sustainability strategy team in developing marketing plans that drive the category and lead to effective communication activities.
  • Manages development of short- and long-term communications strategy based on the global Strategic Business Plan and specific category objectives.
  • Drives the development of effective campaign concepts and channel-plans based on marketing objectives and consumer realities.
  • Manage communications and advertising specific budgets and spending strategies.
  • Lead day-to-day project and coordinate all communication disciplines, advertising, digital, PR, retail, and media.
  • Manage project communications with internal marketing groups, business unit, sports marketing, innovation, markets etc.
  • Provide project management status reports to track progress and Identify areas that require
  • decisions to be made.
  • Oversee development of communication tools from conception to implementation ensuring all projects are on brief and meet the highest creative standards.
  • Manage agencies across projects and activities from briefing and development of concepts through to creative element delivery.
  • Ensure agencies are guided towards creative concept delivery that meets intended objectives for each communication channel and resonates with our target consumer at the market level.
  • Brief sports marketing asset integration when required into campaign activations strategies and plans.
  • Ensure communication and implementation within the markets.
  • Design post-campaign evaluation performance by conducting or coordinating research and tracking project development, collating results into regular quality reports.

  • External: Lead Creative and Media Agencies as well as potential brand partners


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Leadership and entrepreneurial skills.
  • Strong strategic thinking and ability to turn goals into strategies and strategies into initiatives.
  • Deep knowledge of and ever-changing media landscape across touchpoints.
  • Wider understanding for sustainability, innovation, and brand storytelling
  • Advanced experience in project management – including critical path management to deliver projects on time and within budget.
  • Extended experience with campaign production process.
  • Strong influencing skills and interpersonal skills (e.g., communication, cross-functional collaboration)
  • Ability to collaborate with and manage multiple internal and external partners. 
  • Experience in managing small team efficiently.
  • An ability to articulate which elements of digital marketing are suitable for different campaigns and how they deliver results.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized with the ability to work under pressure and manage risk.
  • Strong presentations skills.



Requisite Education and Experience / Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Design, Business, or a related field
  • 8+ years’ work experience in an international marketing environment
  • Fluent written and spoken English language skills.
