Senior Designer FTW Materials Creative Direction (m/f/d)

Purpose & Overall Relevance for the Organization: 

  

Design and leading other in innovating executions of Footwear and/or Apparel Materials. Focused on being an expert and industry leading specialist. 

 

Key responsibilities:  

 

Creative Direction 

Continuously aware of and guides expertise/specialization on information needed to design athlete and brand relevant product.  Should include all possible sources to gain this information: 

  • Trade fairs, cultural events, and sporting events, athlete insights 
  • Trade publications, general interest press, trend services, fashion and sportswear magazines and websites 
  • Store checks, market visits, and team travel as provided 
  • Industry news in Material innovation and manufacturing 

 

Is a key stake holder in driving Creative Direction seasonal and long-term design direction within the following topics: 

  • Apparel, Accessories, and Footwear Materials
  • Knits, Wovens, Leathers/Synthetic Leather, Nonwovens, Finishes, and Trims
  • Incorporating Graphics/Print, Color, and Branding Direction
  • Application onto Footwear and Apparel Silhouettes (Accessories if relevant).

 

Is a key stake holder in driving aforementioned design direction by, but not limited to: 

  • Contribute in trend forecasting material content relevant to our consumer and brand 
  • Contribute in providing technical advanced Material ideation and concepts using functional insights and a strong aesthetic eye 

 

Works closely with various internal and external partners. This includes but is not limited to: 

  • Collaboration and critiquing within Creative Direction’s Color, Material, and Graphics teams 
  • Collaboration and clear communication required with suppliers and development 
  • Collaboration and information sharing with cross-functional partners 
  • Leads as a conduit to all cross-functional partners
  • Works closely with Business Units to collect input and feedback 
  • Communication and collaboration with Advanced Design and Futures to share concepts and ideation 
  • Works closely with Advanced Creation and Development to assist in development of process, manufacturing, and costing 
  • Assists in communicating inspiration and storytelling to Design and Marketing 
  • Works closely with Testing to ensure quality 
  • Acts as a brand ambassador between all functions looking for opportunities to connect direction, product, and people 
  • Sets a leading example within the team and mentors others 
  • Viewed within the team as an expert in their field 

 

Builds top-line strategy into material concepts. This includes but is not limited to: 

  • Leads as a specialist expert in creating holistic overviews, rollouts, and commercialization of material with cross-functional partners 
  • Continually innovates material concepts to create generations of technology 
  • Inform horizontal material concepts across brand 

 

Material Execution 

Manages in designing, innovating, and developing Footwear and/or Apparel Material for Creative Direction with input from cross-functional partners. This includes but is not limited to: 

  • Seasonal prep and research stated above 
  • Design technical and innovative materials with attention to look, feel, and function 
  • Create material innovations with consideration of sustainability and efficiencies  
  • Creates design presentations; both physical and digital 
  • Exploratory process to reach final solution 
  • Creates Material drawings and tech packs 
  • Has experienced knowledge and a higher understanding of product, construction, and the business 
  • Travel worldwide for development trips

  • Creative Direction Color, Graphics / Print & Pattern, and Brand Design

  • A strong working knowledge of product construction and production 
  • A detailed understanding of the creation process 

Computer Skills 

  • Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop 
  • Power Point/Key Note 
  • Apple Mac Operating system 
  • 3D not required, but beneficial 
  • Ability to understand design concepts and think conceptually 
  • Ability to create designs that innovate function for the athlete’s needs 
  • Ability to operate in a fast pace, ever changing work environment 
  • Works well in a team environment. This position requires employee to engage with many stakeholders, as well as manage various information and relationships 
  • Ability and desire to push themselves, others, and the brand forward 
  • Ability to influence and collaborate with key internal and external business partners 
  • Understanding of brand history and current positioning 
  • Understanding of the adidas inline creation process 
  • Understanding of marketplace (footwear and apparel) in all formats (streetwear/fashion) for our consumer 
  • Understanding of brand and their needs 
  • Strong presentation skills 
  • Strong ability to creatively problem solve

 

Desire to comprehensively understand technical facets of material. Including but not limited to: 

  • Technical terminology 
  • Machinery 
  • Manufacturing 
  • Costing 
  • Construction 
  • Development process 
  • Testing

 

Requisite Education and Experience / Minimum Qualifications:  

 

  • Preferably a BSc or MSc in Textiles, Textile Design, Textile Management, or Bachelor Degree in similar design fields 
  • Direct experience in textile, footwear, fashion or and design relevant environment 
  • Thorough knowledge of art and design with clear understanding of visual design or any design related environment  
  • 6 years relevant work experience 
  • Prior management experience  
  • Equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for degree
