Senior Product Owner - Data Engineering

At adidas, Data & Analytics is at the core of everything we do. Core Data Components (CDC) 

is accelerating the scaling of machine learning capabilities across adidas by creating and deploying feature rich core data components to be used in a plug & play fashion across the entire adidas inventory of Advanced Analytics use cases.


By doing so, we enable speed of deployment by abstracting commonly needed data & features in a way, that those can be easily consumed at scale, at high quality and without duplication.


We are an internal team of around 30 professionals with lots of experience on data engineering, solution architecture and data science and span across three different geographies, Herzogenaurach/Germany, Amsterdam/Netherlands, and Gurugram/India. Beyond our internal team, we are scaling our delivery through external vendors, too. We are part of adidas’ Advanced Analytics team in the wider Data and Analytics organization.

The ‘Senior Product Owner – Commercial Science’ in the ‘Core Data Components (CDC) – Commercial Science’ team will lead a team of 4-6 functional experts. The teams will be responsible for the quality and delivery of the Data- and Advanced Analytics products built for specific use cases.

Key Responsibilities


Product Strategy & Delivery

  • Be accountable for the product success considering the value for the consumer and the company
  • Specify the product vision and roadmap as well as user stories considering the value for the consumer and the company as well as its role and impact on the adidas digital ecosystem.
  • Be accountable for product delivery in line with the roadmap and committed delivery dates. Identify and solve dependencies with other product owners to ensure efficient delivery.
  • Coordinate interfaces between different product teams in your area of responsibility.


Stakeholder management

  • Represent the business for the product, fostering strong relationships with key stakeholders to ensure that their views and requirements are captured in the product backlog.
  • Manage the relationships with the Global Operations business owner and project team, ensuring their views and requirements are captured
  • Act as the ambassador for your use case, showcasing the key functionalities and driving adoption


Backlog Management

  • Prioritize the items in your product backlog. Specify the definition-of-done in cooperation with the product team(s).
  • Own the refinement of your product backlog to ensure that the product team(s) is/are delivering the right enhancements to drive consumer and business value.
  • Provide acceptance for delivered backlog items by the team, in line with the definition-of-done.


People management

  • Build and develop high-performing product teams

Education & Experience

  • Degree with focus on Economics, Data Science, or IT or related areas, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 6+ years of experience working in a Data Science, Analytics or Data Engineering environment
  • 4+ years working as a Product Owner or product management related role, preferably in an agile working setup
  • Experience in working with stakeholders and experts at various organizational levels
  • Experience in creating strong internal business cases to support investment and internal resource requests
  • Experience as a Product Owner in at least one additional product area or domain
  • Experience with release cycles and agile way of working
  • Fluency in at least two of the standard data science programming languages (e.g., Python, R, Java, Scala, Octave)
  • Solid understanding of relational databases and NoSQL databases
  • Deep understanding of data science methods (including supervised techniques, unsupervised techniques, recommender systems) is a plus
  • Experience with Databricks is a plus

Hard Skills

  • Hands-on background in managing a Data Engineering, Data Science and/or Data Analytics Product
  • Proven experience with analytics tools and disciplines (SQL, Python, R, statistics, data visualization etc.
