Manager Material Development APP

Purpose & Overall Relevance for the Organization:


Drives the material (fabric and trims) development for respective Creation Center according to creation timelines, target price, sourcing policy and quality standard. Ensuring product integrity and product excellence by working closely with Product development, Design, Marketing and all related support services to identify and commercialize fabrics and trims that meet or exceed adidas quality standards and business needs.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Research material trends by identifying future technologies and driving their implementation and commercialization to ensure adidas on the leading edge of materials innovation, contact with T1 and T2 suppliers (fabrics and trims) for constant R&D.
  • Being the key contact for all internal and external interfaces regarding material related questions for assigned categories, train and educate x-functional team on material topics.
  • Initiate and monitor material developments, driving the implement and commercialization by guiding and collaborate with material suppliers, Sourcing, Quality and Creation Center Development, Design, Product marketing. Ensure buy ready performance for assigned categories.
  • Responsible for initial material price negotiations with suppliers during development stage.
  • Maintenance correct materials data in internal data system MLM, FLEX for technical data, cost, toolbox, lifecycle
  • Manage materials toolbox setup and maintenance, enable x-functional team to easily select material to complement specific seasonal needs.
  • Execute the strategy to promote opportunities for actively increasing material commonality across Bus and material consolidation to x-functional team
  • Cooperate with material teams globally to drive consolidation and increase material efficiencies
  • Ensure global materials strategy is thoughtfully implemented on the Creation centre level to meet business needs for the respective materials category
  • Ensure continuous product and process improvement with emphasis on quality product development and timely completion of products in accordance with the operating calendar
  • Be an effective partner to sourcing to help drive the supplier strategy and seasonal allocations based on suppliers’ capabilities, product range, price, development speed and degree of innovation for the respective materials category
  • Execute key material initiatives and provide input to short and longer-range planning
  • Manage the material developments of a category of appropriate size

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong knowledge of material construction and good trims knowledge
  • Understanding of the material supply chain (planning, allocation and production)
  • Business Mindset: Strong numerical and analytical skills, feeling for economics behind materials and strong ability to negotiate
  • Pro- active (engaging & impact-oriented) mindset, willingness to take risks on decisions
  • Good communication skills, especially when interacting with different levels of business needs
  • Good at problem solving, ability to anticipate problems, offers solutions, and address issues for materials to meet the Design team’s aesthetic goals and financial targets
  • Ability to cope with change, make decisions and act comfortably with risk and uncertainty
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with different international cultures
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed
  • language skills:  fluent in English, some basic German helpful
  • IT skills: MS Office mandatory, PLM system knowledge preferred
    Requisite Education and Experience / Minimum Qualifications:
  • 4-year college or university degree with emphasis on clothing/material technology and/or manufacturing; textile engineering or textile commercial background
  • minimum 3-5 years of progressive work experience in the garment/textile industry
  • Fluent in both English and Chinese Mandarin
  • Strong IT skills (e-mail, MS office)
