Senior Manager Footwear Development - Originals

Purpose & Overall Relevance for the Organisation:  

 

Take ownership for the entire product development process for assigned high complexity and/or high volume, innovative and/or technical products, with an emphasis on craftsmanship and timely completion of all tasks in accordance with the applicable product creation calendar.  

 

Individual is a go to expert within BU/department/team for questions related to complex development topics e.g. standards, testing, technology, innovation etc.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Manage complex, high volume and/or innovative projects and the product development process for innovative, complex and highly technical products across different functions and Business Units / Sport Categories by supporting the respective Business Units and directly interacting with Tier 1 supply partners for regular and seasonal product introductions
  • Ensure that all materials, components and products are fully tested and adhere to adidas quality, safety and A01 standards. Manage quality exceptions with senior management as needed.
  • Engineer technically complex prototypes that meet function, aesthetic, market appeal and manufacturability within cost targets. Review prototypes for quality, execution, and fit.
  • Provide effective transition of innovative and/or technical designs from the prototyping stage through commercialization into production while monitoring manufacturability, material selection, quality standards, bill of material, Costing requirements and development schedule.
  • Ensure timely and accurate data entry by T1 regarding BOM, costing or other data as required
  • Assume full product cost responsibility and evaluate and drive iterations and transparency in order to define the correct cost standards for the concept
  • Plan, manage and communicate development calendars, manage external partners and cross functional stakeholders
  • Actively develop and maintain a knowledge platform for sharing knowledge and technologies with the x-functional teams and across different BUs as relevant
  • Develop guidelines and handbooks on existing and new processes/standards and manage their roll-out and implementation across all functions and BUs / Categories
  • Emphasize innovative use of components, materials, construction and execution of design for performance functionality.
  • Communicate & coordinate all necessary information to Marketing, Design, Suppliers and LO/OC to ensure the effective and efficient creation of outstanding product (e.g. Color Way Activation, etc,)
  • Take full responsibility for organizational tasks and communication including Sample Request Form completion and use of the adidas Product Data Management System (where necessary and applicable)
  • Develop, train and educate x-functional teams across BUs on Business Champion topics
  • Guide and mentor team members
  • Act as the x-functional/cross-BU/Category Business Champion/Go-to person for a specific topic (e.g. Bonding, Down, Seamless constructions, PU prints, underwear etc.)
  • Travel, domestic and international as required by business needs

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

  • Strong understanding of the respective vision and strategy for the BUs.
  • Advanced understanding of virtual creation / 3D
  • Possess functional knowledge of wear and physical product testing (category)
  • Possess a deep and end-to-end understanding of product creation
  • Advanced knowledge of Last/Tooling/Pattern constructions
  • Advanced knowledge of the Yield management
  • Advanced knowledge about manufacturing innovation
  • Expert knowledge of at least 2 areas of the product creation process (footwear/garment/materials construction and manufacturing, etc.)
  • Expert knowledge about SOP / Processes
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with designers in translating their ideas into product
  • Ability to provide (technical) training in product engineering and development to the whole development teams cross functionally
  • Ability to apply technical understanding across categories
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and to provide customized solutions
  • Ability to work independently under minimal guidance on several projects simultaneously while adhering to a specified deadline
  • Advanced ability to map and improve processes
  • Excellent communication skills e.g. presentation, negotiation, conflict management etc.
  • Advanced IT skills (MS Office) and ability to work with Product Data Management Systems
  • Fluent English

 

Requisite Education and Experience / Minimum Qualifications: 

 

  • 3-5-year college or university degree preferable in the footwear/textile/sport science/clothing technology/manufacturing industry, mechanical engineering and/or equivalent education
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive work experience in the athletic footwear/apparel industry, specializing in product development / engineering, design and / or marketing
  • Proven record of accomplishment in the field of apparel/materials development
