Senior Legal Counsel

Purpose & Function:


The purpose of this role is to :-


  • support General Counsel, GOPS + Asia Pacific to drive and manage a full and comprehensive range of in house legal services to Global Operations operating in the Asia Pacific region as well as other Corporate Functions operating out of the Hong Kong office
  • support General Counsel, GOPS + Asia Pacific to manage global initiatives rollout under GOPS
  • assist General Counsel GOPS + Asia Pacific as Compliance Officer to report and follow up on all the relevant compliance cases and projects in order to ensure legal compliance, increased risk awareness as well as transparency


Key Responsibilities:


  • Lead and manage the legal team based in Hong Kong to ensure the provision of a full and comprehensive range of efficient in house legal services
  • Provide day-to-day direction and guidance to direct reports to achieve Legal & Compliance team goals and personal development
  • Coach, train and develop personnel in the team
  • Lead by example on cross-functional collaborations and support the one Global Legal & Compliance team philosophy
  • Manage and provide supervision to the legal team to ensure compliance of relevant company registration/business registration of all Sourcing companies and offices in accordance with the relevant jurisdiction and legal requirements
  • Lead the management, negotiation and resolution of all day-to-day legal issues for Sourcing as well as other Corporate Functions operating out of the Hong Kong office
  • Provide legal advice and suggest action plan or solution to business stakeholders on their day-to-day business operations as well as other strategic initiatives
  • Lead and manage the provision of legal services including counselling, contract review, drafting and negotiation, structuring of transactions, legal risk assessment, and dispute avoidance to protect interests of adidas Group
  • Work closely with the other legal departments within Global Legal and Compliance to ensure effective collaboration in leading, supporting and/or facilitating rollout of global initiatives under GOPS and strengthening of governance particularly of the tradeco structure
  • Review legal enquiries from Sourcing offices or subsidiaries and provide relevant directions to resolve the issues
  • Support the Sourcing Management Team in the implementation and execution of the Strategic Business Plan
  • Maintain a high level of communication with key stakeholder and department heads
  • Investigate, research and resolve legal matters within corporate policies to achieve an advantageous company position
  • Establish relevant legal policies and procedures to better protect the group’s interests
  • Develop and conduct educational programs and materials as appropriate in relevant legal areas to raise legal awareness and ensure compliance
  • Perform all activities of a dedicated Local Compliance Officer (with a minimum capacity commitment of 20%), in particular
    • Prevent - Drive culture of compliance and integrity, risk assessments, compliance communications, policy implementation, trainings, etc.
    • Detect - Administer compliance controls and other detection processes
    • Respond - Manage compliance incidents, investigations, consequences, etc.
  • Collaborate closely with Regional Compliance Managers and Group Compliance Management to ensure the effective implementation and continuous improvement of the compliance management system
  • Manage effective and appropriate supervision and management of delivery of legal services through outside counsel

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong background in contract drafting and negotiation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required in order to liaise with internal and/or external parties in confidential matters
  • Good knowledge of intellectual property laws (particularly in respect of product development issues)
  • Ability to contribute to and execute strategy
  • Comprehensive business understanding of processes and structure
  • Business fluency in English (written and spoken).  Ability to write and speak Chinese (Cantonese) would be advantageous
  • Excellent client relations management skills (including ability to interact with stakeholders at all levels)
  • Strong commercial sense and ability to make practical evaluations of risks
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work both independently and as a senior part of a team, and to manage and prioritize substantial and diverse workload
  • High degree of stakeholder orientation and appropriate prioritization
  • Excellent analytical skills in order to analyze complex issues and to improve processes and techniques


Requisite Education and Experience / Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Hong Kong or commonwealth qualified solicitor with at least 8 years' post qualification experience, preferably with relevant in-house experience
  • Solid experience in general corporate work, commercial contracts and employment law
  • Experience in team management
